Don't be Bamboozled by Bamboo

"Do you carry bamboo baby clothes?"

The short answer is “no”.

We are asked this quite often.  When I first opened Eco Carmel, I thought I would stock organic cotton and bamboo sheets, towels and baby clothing, but when I dug into each further, I learned that bamboo wood is what is “green” - it grows fast and makes a durable material for flooring, furniture and cutting boards.  But the “greenness” of bamboo stops there.  Making fabric involves taking the cellulose and putting it through various chemical processes to get soft material.

At the time I was choosing fabrics for the store in 2009, the FTC came out with a mandate that bamboo fabric companies had to be truthful in their labelling and print “Bamboo Viscose” or “Bamboo Rayon” on their products.

What’s so bad about bamboo rayon?  It’s not as durable as organic cotton but it is also a semi-synthetic fabric that uses sodium hydroxide and carbon disulfide in the processing, both of which are highly toxic and a risk to human health.

We want what’s healthiest for children and that is why we are proud to carry organic cotton, a pesticide, chemical free, breathable material that is safe against the skin!
